Mathematics
Introduction
Sterling College provides solid preparation and mental discipline that prepares Mathematics majors for career opportunities in today’s technology driven world.
Program Overview
A major in mathematics features applications of mathematics in the physical sciences and computer science, providing knowledge and skills required for entry level positions in business, industry or secondary education.
Areas of Emphasis
Mathematics majors often follow one of four avenues to insure success following graduation.
- Actuarial Studies
- Applied Mathematics
- Computer and Information Science
- Secondary Teacher Licensure
Actuarial Studies
Mathematics can be coupled with Business to pursue a career in the field of actuarial studies. Did you know that an actuary is one of the highest paid career fields in the country? Many companies rely on actuaries to help assess their potential risk with new and existing projects, and so this major demands a thorough knowledge of calculus, financial mathematics and general problem solving. Actuarial studies major will prepare you for the professional assessment tests administered by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and the Society of Actuaries (SOA).
Applied Mathematics
Some Sterling mathematics graduates have pursued graduate work in mathematics, and now are teaching at the college level. Majors may also choose to pursue graduate level studies in the area of mathematics or other related fields. Mathematics is also vital in supplementing the medical school preparatory program. With the addition of Biology, Mathematics majors could pursue a graduate degree in Biostatistics in order to work in medical research, or Biometry, an agricultural field. This major also prepares Sterling College graduates for a career with government agencies such as NSA or NASA.
Computer and Information Science
Another approach is the Mathematics major with an emphasis in Computer and Information Science. Many Sterling College graduates with this emphasis have moved on to enjoy successful careers in the computer science field working with such companies as Travelers Insurance Corporation and Accenture. We have had some excellent students go on to graduate from schools across the country with a concentration in computer software.
Secondary Teacher Licensure
Most common is the coupling of the Mathematics major with Secondary Teacher Licensure. This prepares students for a career in mathematics education at the junior high and high school level. Sterling College works very hard with the Education Department; thus we have produced excellent math teachers who have impressed the high schools employing our graduates.
